The fixture emits a glare-free, diffused light. The triple-layered opal glass provides a pleasant and uniform illumination of the area around the fixture. The lamp shade can be tilted 90 degrees to the right or left, which allows for flexible light distribution.
DESIGNER
VILHELM LAURITZEN
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) is one of the most significant architects in the history of Denmark; he was the trail-blazing figurehead of Danish functionalism.
A number of his buildings – Nørrebro Theatre (1931–32), Daells Varehus department store (1928–35), Radiohuset (1936-41) and the first airport built in Kastrup (1937–39) – represented the concentrated essence of contemporary life.
Other significant buildings to stem from Lauritzen’s drawing board include Folkets Hus (1953–56) better known today as the Vega concert venue, the Shellhuset (1950–51) building and the Danish embassy in Washington (1958–60).
In particular the Radiohuset building and the earliest version of Kastrup Airport – both listed today – are considered peerless monuments to modernism in the European genre of construction.
Throughout his life, Vilhelm Lauritzen adhered to the principle that architecture is applied art – with equal emphasis on both ‘art’ and ‘applied’. “No life without aesthetics” was another one of Vilhelm Lauritzen’s firmly held beliefs.
Vilhelm Lauritzen mastered both daylight and artificial lighting. He consistently involved daylight in his architectural projects by including large south- and west-facing windows that neatly mixed warm sunlight with the cooler sky light flowing in through windows facing north and east. It was an approach that shifted focus from the limited wall surfaces in the room itself. People, furnishings and fittings are highlighted and shaded in the sculptural light.
Lauritzen’s fixtures light up with the same idea. They combine strongly directed light that produces sharp shadows with a gentler, more diffuse illumination that softens and shades the rooms.
FEATURES
A COZY TOUCH OF ELEGANT ILLUMINATION
The VL Studio Wall lamp has been subject to minor modifications compared to the original lamp. The VL Studio Wall lamp is also available in a matt black finish for a more graphic expression, as well as the classic brass version, which is slightly brushed and will develop a distinct patina over time.
PERFECT FOR ANY ROOM
The angle of the lamp head can be turned 90 degrees to each side to direct the distribution of the glare-free and diffused light. The VL Studio Wall lamp is equally suitable in the recreational areas of hotels, in retail, lounges, offices or other public spaces as it is, for instance, in the bathroom.

HISTORY
THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
The VL Studio family derives from a lamp designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen for Radiohuset (The Radio House, headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in Copenhagen in the 1940s. The name ‘Studio’ was chosen because some of the lamps were used outside studios to indicate – with either a red or green light – whether recording was taking place.
Vilhelm Lauritzen was the architect behind Radiohuset, which was inaugurated in his functionalist design in 1945. Radiohuset is a ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ – like most of Lauritzen’s buildings – meaning that he designed all the interiors and every detail of the building for the project.
When developing Radiohuset, Lauritzen designed a broad collection of lamps in close collaboration with Louis Poulsen. For this project, Lauritzen created the Studio lamp, the VL 38 Table lamp (VL38), the Radiohus Pendant (VL45) and the VL Ring Crown lamps.
After the creation of the lamps in the 1940s, they were produced by Louis Poulsen. However, over the years, they were all taken out of production. The VL45 (Radiohus Pendant) and the VL38 (Table lamp originally from the interior of the building) were reintroduced in 2016, the VL Ring Crown in 2019, and most recently the VL Studio lamp in 2022.
The VL Studio lamp is closely related to the Radiohus Pendant; both create a diffused light through opaline glass which provides a pleasant general light around the lamp. True to its original materials and design with minor modifications, the VL Studio Wall lamp was reintroduced in 2022.
It is made of polished brass that is slightly brushed with glossy white, triple-layered, mouth-blown opal glass. The VL Studio Wall lamp is also available in a new matt black version for a more graphical, clean expression compared to the soft, warm look of the polished brass version. The VL Studio Wall lamp brings a modern touch and warm ambience to any interior with its simple aesthetic and exquisite materials.
