J42 ARMCHAIR
J42 ARMCHAIR
Designed By Børge Mogensen
Designed by Børge Mogensen, the J42 Chair is a timeless Danish classic. This armchair features a solid wood frame with a spindled back set at a slight angle for added comfort.
HAY’s reproduction of Børge Mogensen’s classic J 42 chair clearly reflects his design philosophy. Precise proportions with simple horizontal and vertical lines are used to construct a curved spindled backrest and angular armrests.
DESIGNER
BØRGE MOGENSEN
Børge Mogensen studied under and worked for Kaare Klint, the father of Danish modern design, and later was his teaching assistant at the Royal Academy. Klint’s emphasis on human scale, excellent materials, functionalism and craftsmanship influenced Mogensen, though he adopted an embrace of mass production and a hellbent calling to lighten the heavy Danish furniture of the past.
One of the greatest Danish designers of the twentieth century, Børge Mogensen's works are characterized by simplicity, durability, and precise proportions – the embodiment of Danish modernism. Having initially trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, Mogensen then studied architecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
He later became design director at the Danish Co-Operative Society, FDB, where he focused on creating well-designed, functional furniture that could be industrially produced for the general public. HAY has recreated Børge Mogensen’s timeless J41 and J42 chairs, which were part of the J-Series he designed during his time at FBD.
