CARE GUIDE - OILED WOOD

An oiled finish is a durable natural looking finish that can be revitalised (and if necessary, more easily repaired). Oiled finishes require some low level maintenance to keep the wood protected and looking its best.

DO NOT

-Leave any water, wine, oil or liquids that might stain – wipe up as quickly as possible. (Oil provides a semi-permeable finish, which means some liquids can penetrate the surface if left). -Use any chemical cleaning products or bleach as this will remove the protective layer of oil and it will then stain.

DAY TO DAY CLEANING

-Wipe up wine, oil and any liquids that might stain as quickly as possible. -Wipe clean with a damp non-abrasive cloth, then using a dry cloth remove any excess moisture. -To ensure the finish remains as resilient as possible to staining we recommend Osmo Wash & Care (8016) as it contains soaps and oils to both nourish and prevent the wood from drying out.

6 MONTHLY REPLENISHMENT / MORE STUBBORN STAINS

As the piece is used it can dry out as the oil can thin with wear and washing with water alone. If the table looks dry or you have a more stubborn stain we recommend using a revitalising Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner (white 3087) for oak pieces and (clear 3029) for walnut pieces

MATERIAL & FINISHES

LEGS: BLACK STAINED EUROPEAN OAK

Our Ort legs are stained black before being hand cut to create contrast, and reveal the beauty of the natural timber beneath. Finally they are finished with a a protective clear oil to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage..

ENGLISH YEW

Yew is a softwood conifer tree that is unusually hard, heavy and tight grained. Knots, and sap wood are typical and its grain can be very figured. The warm pinky-orange hue will gradually mature over the years to a considerably darker colour more like American cherry or a medium mahogany. We use a protective clear oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.

OLIVE ASH

Olive ash comes from an ash tree that has been infected by a non-damaging bacteria which causes irregular dark streaks in the timber creating a similar appearance to that of olive wood. We use a protective clear oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.

LEGS: EUROPEAN OAK

European oak is a temperate white oak hardwood native to Europe. It presents a golden to light brown hue with a minimal grain pattern. We use a protective white oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.

RIPPLE SYCAMORE

Sycamore is a variety of Maple (Acer). The most prized sycamore is described as rippled, meaning there is a wave in the grain which, when cut exhibits a stunning three-dimensional figure. Ripple sycamore is generally found at the base of the trunk.

The most heavily figured sycamore is sometimes referred to as ‘fiddleback’ because of its use in the construction of high grade musical instrument cases. Sycamore becomes darker and more yellow with age, we slow this process down by finishing the timber with a white oil.

BLACK AMERICAN WALNUT

Black American walnut is slow growing deciduous tree native to north America and Canada producing edible nuts. Black walnut is a hardwood prized for its dark brown, purplish hue with a sometimes swirling grain, it can display many unique characteristics, such as knots and variations in depth of tone, resulting in truly distinctive piece.

Walnut will get lighter with age becoming more honeyed over time. We use a protective clear oil finish which enables the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.

ENGLISH BROWN OAK

Brown oak is from an oak tree where the timber is naturally coloured by the fungus Fistulina Hepatica, commonly called the beefsteak fungus, due to its blood red colour. Often mature trees with a branch which has fallen off will attract the fungus and the colouring starts at the ‘wound’ and slowly penetrates the tree, so there may be a mix of white and brown in some trees, running to solid brown eventually. This means some tops can be all brown and others partially brown.

Brown oak is rare to discover and valuable as such. Leaning towards the more unusual and highly-figured sections of wood, we hand-pick every piece - admiring the organic detail and lively displays of character. We use a protective clear oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully, gradually getting darker without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.

DETAIL

THE BEGINNING

Inspired by visits to the woodyard and the ambition to give new life to the small but beautiful sections of wood that are cut away as our furniture is made, our Ort tables are small and perfectly-formed celebrations of the natural beauty of unprocessed and responsibly sourced timber.

Pinch Ort Table

We hand select these pieces of beautiful wood (often characterful and highly figured but precious nonetheless), to be turned into small perches ideal for drawing up close to a sofa or armchair when you need a home for a book, cup or glass (or two) and the coffee table seems too far away.

In our design studio, sketches move quickly to experimentation in 1:5 balsa models. We create model after model in our workshop, as forms start to take shape.

The hand-turned legs are a nod to the process of figurative hand-carved walking sticks, where the linear elements are expertly turned and cut to create pattern and/or contrast, and reveal the beauty of the natural timber beneath.

The Ort tables are what we define as studio products, finished by our team in London, bringing the making and the feel of the furniture central to what we love to do.
