DESIGNER
ANDRÉ SCHELBACH
André Schelbach was born in 1969 in Detmold, East Westphalia, and has frequently changed his place of residence and perspective since then. He has lived and worked in Siegen, Stuttgart, Osaka, and Shanghai.
His work as a designer has taken him to Russia and China extensively. Today, he is based in Detmold and Shanghai and works as a product designer. His most famous creation is the Magic Desk, which he designed in 2008 for his German company, Yomei.
The son of a well-known interior designer, Siegfried Schelbach, he initially studied industrial engineering at the University of Siegen from 1990 to 1995, specializing in marketing within business administration and design within mechanical engineering.
He graduated with a degree in industrial engineering. Reflecting his broad interest in other cultures, he also took a Japanese language course. Inspired by this, he moved to Osaka, Japan, where he completed a six-month internship at a German-Japanese company.
His time in Japan significantly influenced his design language Following his inclinations, he subsequently decided to begin his studies at the renowned Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, world-famous for its Weissenhof Estate.
There he received instruction from, among others, well-known designers such as Richard Sapper. During his studies, he also took courses in sculpture, figure drawing, and glassblowing.
After graduating with a diploma in design, he worked for several years as a designer at the Jürgen Lange Design studio in Grafenau, contributing to projects with companies such as Behr, Schönbuch, Aigner, Interlübke, and Rosenthal. During this time, he collaborated on several projects with the Italian designer Alessandro Andreucci.
André Schelbach's time as a designer at the design studio s-designteam (since 1999), one of the leading names in German furniture design, had a lasting impact on him.
At s-designteam, he developed furniture lines for renowned brands such as Hülsta, among others. With a blend of artistic ambition and sound pragmatism, he developed his own style and a particular affinity for Asia.
He founded the company Yomei in July 2006. The name comes from Japanese and means "excellent." Behind the top quality is a manufactory that produces the furniture with the utmost care in Detmold, East Westphalia, and a competent sales team that has been marketing the collection internationally since summer 2007.
In 2009, the company received the Red Dot Award for its renowned Magic Desk. In 2010, he founded the sales company "Schelbach Home" together with his parents.
Solid wood furniture, manufactured in Germany, Austria, and Italy by renowned producers, is sold under a single collection in their own specially designed shops, each with its own distinct philosophy. All three founders share a common passion: crafting modern, high-quality furniture from solid wood sourced from natural resources.
They draw inspiration from the diversity of nature, which they believe is particularly evident in forests. Here, the primal power of trees is experienced with profound fascination.
Their motto, "less is more," aligns them with the guiding principle of "form follows function" within the functionalist design philosophy.

STRAIGHT AND FILIGREE
The SMART console was the outstanding new product presented by Yomei at imm cologne 2012. Externally, it offers the usual straightforward and delicate design that connoisseurs are accustomed to from Yomei. But the surprise, the real highlight of this novelty, is hidden inside the console. A spacious drawer with plenty of storage space and a variable internal drawer turns out to be an ideal storage system. Even the devices that are located on the console can be "energized".
