MAYOR AJ5 SOFA
MAYOR AJ5 SOFA
Designed by Arne Jacobsen & Flemming Lassen
In 1939 Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen won an open competition to design a new town hall, a new library and a theatre in Søllerød (Rudersdal).
For the town hall, they designed a wedding room with accompanying furniture - including a sofa for the waiting area for the couple to sit in before getting married.
Designed for the solemnity, the appearance of the sofa was shaped with high vertical backs and sides.
DESIGNERS
ARNE JACOBSEN & FLEMMING LASSEN
Founding figures of the Danish Modernism movement and recognised for their Functionalist approach to design, Arne Jacobsen (1902 – 1971) and Flemming Lassen (1902 – 1984) are considered to be two of Scandinavia's most influential architects.
Working collaboratively on a series of projects and competitions, they conceived the award-winning “House of the Future” – a spiral-shaped home which included a helicopter pad, a conveyor tube for mail and a kitchen stocked with ready-made meals.
This endeavour not only heralded the arrival of new architectural principles but solidified the duo as icons of contemporary design.
Jacobsen and Lassen went on to design numerous other projects, both together and as individuals, which brought them international acclaim, situating them within the vanguard of functionalist architecture.
Coming together in the late 1930s, Jacobsen and Lassen created the Mayor sofa for Søllerød’s city hall on the outskirts of Copenhagen. A timeless design whose appeal lies in its striking departure from other forms of the era, the Mayor sofa, with its distinguishing stiff-backed shape, is the epitome of modernist simplicity and a core part of the &Tradition collection.
